We’d been hearing good reports about the Hog Wild Smokehouse, named as one of the best places for barbecue by National Barbecue News in 2008. So we were overdue for a trip to this small, out-of-the-way restaurant in the Toano section of James City County.
We found great barbecue, but the real surprise was the long list of Cajun items on the menu.Owners Blanche and BillLee Watkins have ties to Louisiana, and they’ve brought that amazing cuisine with them. Reading about catfish po-boys, gumbo and muffuletta sandwiches made me long for a trip back to New Orleans.
But this mission was barbecue so we ordered a beef brisket sandwich served with cole slaw in a soft hamburger bun. The sandwich comes with your choice of sides, and the lineup includes sweet potato fries, baked beans, Cajun slaw and several others. We chose collards that were sweet and tangy from being slow-cooked in cider vinegar.
The brisket, slow-cooked and piled high, was tender and flavorful. On the table are a half-dozen bottles of sauces so you can choose which style best suits you.
Service was a bit slow but not uncomfortably so, and our waitress stopped by several times to check on us.
Hog Wild serves a winning barbecue sandwich — I can’t wait to return and dive into the Cajun menu. — David Nicholson

Virginia to receive the award and only fifty-four
nationwide.
The April 2007 issue of Arthur Frommer's Budget
Travel magazine quotes filmaker Roger Sherman "The muffuletta
sandwich was better than anything I remember eating in the Big Easy
and the hand pulled barbeque pork made me sorry to be leaving
town."

Taste
Buds Dailypress.com readers weigh in: I am definitely "hog
wild" about Hog Wild! I love the offerings of Louisiana cuisine. I
haven't found another restaurant in the area that offers these
selections. We were told by the waitress that the chef has family in
Louisiana, so all recipes are authentic! My husband (a barbecue
fiend) would recommend the beef brisket and pulled pork. It has just
the right amount of smoky flavor. The array of sauces is
delicious! For dessert, the sweet potato pie is the perfect ending.
I always recommend Hog Wild to anyone who asks! Donna Madison,
Williamsburg
